Blocked Drains Can Be a Gold Coast Home Owner’s
Whether it’s a blocked sewer line or a blocked storm water pipe, this can be one of the most frustrating and inconvenient plumbing problems you can have. Especially if you are experiencing raw sewage running down your driveway, across your garden or worse, through your home!
All Gold Coast houses generally have two types of drains. A sewer drain which carries the waste away from a house and a stormwater drain which carries the rain water away from a house.
A lot of people don’t realise that a sewer drain has separate pipework to a stormwater drain and they should not join together. This is because sewer is dirty and the pipework needs to travel to either the council’s sewerage system for treatment or to an onsite septic system. However the rain collected from your roof is considered clean and does not need treatment. So it generally travels to a roadside kerb which makes its way into the Gold Coast council’s stormwater system and eventually to a river and out to sea.
There are certain signs that can indicate if your sewer pipes are clogged. Some of the common signs are:
- Water backing up in your toilet, sink, bath or shower
- A gurgling / bubbling noise in your toilet
- Water or laundry suds coming out of your floor drains
- Smelly floor waste / drains
The common signs that your storm water drain pipes are congested usually happen when it is raining. Things you may notice are:
- Water bubbling out the bottom of your drain pipe
- Overflowing gutters
- Water backing up into your roof / walls overflowing from the guttering
- Water bubbling out of the ground where the storm water pipes run
How to clean a blocked drain
People often start by trying to unblock a drainpipe themselves by either trying to plunge a blocked toilet or by putting a chemical down the toilet or waste pipe of a sink, shower or bath. Or for a storm water pipe they may use a hose to try and clean the blockage.
If the pipe only has a minor blockage then these methods may work. Sometimes these methods will work for a short period of time, but then the blockage will come back again. If you are unable to clean your pipes with these methods then it is an indication that you have a severe blockage and you will need to get a Gold Coast plumber to clean the pipes for you.
If a blockage is severe and needs to be cleared by a Gold Coast plumber it is better to get the plumber to clear the pipe sooner rather than later. For example if your pipe is stuffed with tree roots, leaving the pipe and hoping that it will just clear itself will give the tree roots more time to grow. In the right environment where tree roots have food and water such as in a sewer pipe, the tree roots can grow very quickly. The larger the tree roots and the more constricted the pipe, the longer it takes to clear the blockage, and the more money it will cost.
A plumber that uses a drain camera together with a high pressure water jet cleaner is able to locate the blockage in sewer and blocked stormwater pipes quickly and easily, saving you time and money by avoiding digging up your whole garden. This way the CCTV Camera technology can first locate the blockage in your pipe and then the high pressure water jet cleaner can clean the pipes. It can cut out tree root growth, break up sludge and debris, penetrate grease, and flush out the line.
Make sure your Gold Coast plumber shows you that the pipe has been cleaned thoroughly on the CCTV camera once the job has been completed.
